Whether you are deciding to move so you can get into a larger space, for a job relocation, or just wanted to a new location, there are all kinds of things that you will need to think about to make a move happen. Selling a home is a huge task and one that you shouldn’t do alone. A realtor is there to help you make all the right decisions and give you an advisor on all kinds of questions you have. Finding the perfect realtor is essential, but with an area full of willing realtors, how do you find the right one for you?
Determine your goals
The first thing you should do is determine your goals. Your intentions may be as specific as finding a home in a particular neighborhood or suburb or as wide-ranging as finding a home within 30 miles of your workplace. You may be looking to downsize or upgrade. You may also have specific needs like a home with a master bedroom on the main level, or have lack of living space for a relative or an apartment in the basement for income. By knowing what your specific need is, you will better be able to determine what agents will work for you.
Network
Just like when you are searching for a new job or a looking for a new restaurant, you ask people you know and trust. Word of mouth is the best way to get recommendations. Whether it is a group you are part of on Facebook or asking a friend or family member people you know are the ones that will tell you about an agent. Following up on recommendations for looking up their Facebook ratings, and seeing what they have done to help others previously will help you learn more about how an agent works for their clients.
Interview them
When looking for a realtor, it may be tempting to trust someone and just go with an agent. Avoid that temptation. When you are hiring someone for a job, you will always want to interview them in person. The same should go for an agent. You can tell a lot more about someone that you have met in person. In person, you will be able to know if they are in a rush to get you sold on a home, or if they are patient enough to get you in the RIGHT house. You will be able to tell if they know the area and if they will fight for you with to get all the right discounts and prices and if they will be able to stick with you during the highs and lows.
Find out the realtor’s credentials
Just like doctors and lawyers have specific credentials, real estate agents have them too. They can take classes and tests to get the training needed to give them more knowledge and hold them accountable in situations involving ethical and professional behaviors. Make sure your agents have all the necessary certifications they need.
In the end, an agent will be your advocate in navigating the stressful situations that arise in the home buying process. Make sure you have on that will make it as easy as possible to buy the right house for you.
